Palesinian Man´s Cloak, or Abaya .. Early 20th century

The Southall Collection is a major collection of Palestinian Dress dating from 1900-1930. It includes garments and accessories worn by nomadic Bedouin people as well as men, women and children living in Ramallah and Bethlehem.

This early 20th century men’s cloak or Abayeh consists of two pieces of hand-woven coarse wool, in black and cream, sewn together horizontally at approximately the hipline, and folded to be stitched at the shoulders… then slit to pass the hands out and form the cloak so very well known and used by men throughout the Middle East… although sometimes made of different fabric and embroidered or edged with braided rope, to emphasize the wearers identty, as is the case with all items of clothing …

Handwoven coarse wool in black and cream. Embroidery in silk with red, green, yellow satin and straight stitch.
